Project Scope
This project involved a comprehensive redesign of the homepage for a metropolitan city council’s website. As a high-traffic digital gateway serving a diverse user base, the existing homepage required significant improvements in usability, accessibility, and service discoverability. The primary aim was to ensure the new design reflected a modern, user-focused structure while remaining fully aligned with the council’s established digital brand and accessibility standards.
Objectives
The core objectives were to simplify the overall structure of the homepage, prioritise the visibility and accessibility of essential services, and create an intuitive navigation system that worked effectively across all devices. Ensuring compliance with WCAG accessibility guidelines was critical, as was delivering a solution that adhered to the council’s visual identity and governance frameworks.
Solutions delivered
I developed a streamlined homepage layout that significantly improved content hierarchy and navigation clarity. A new, flexible design system was introduced, specifically tailored for homepage components, to support scalability and consistency. UX research and behavioural analytics informed key design decisions, including the placement of calls to action and user pathways. The final deliverable included a developer-ready UI kit to ensure a smooth handover for implementation within the council’s content management system.
Impact
This was handed over to the in-house development team and they have been integrating the new design system a piece at a time.
